Treat the bottom profile as background geometry and you lose the wave. In surf-pool bathymetry the depths, transitions, reef-like zones, shelves and damping areas are the control surface that turns moving water into a surfable wave.

Calculate the bathymetry alongside the target wave. Leave it until after the architecture and it spends its life patching other people's decisions.

A bottom profile fixed too late has to compensate for the basin and generation choices already locked in. We check how the profile receives the water impulse, where the wave grows, where it breaks, and where reflected energy comes back to disturb the next cycle.

Can bathymetry be designed without CFD?

You can sketch a preliminary profile, but the working one needs the water's response. Without it, the breaking point and the shoulder are just guesses.

Why do small depth changes matter?

The free surface is sensitive to depth transitions and reflections. A local change to the profile can shift the breaking area or weaken the shoulder.

Is bathymetry separate from wave generation?

No. The profile only means something together with the incoming water impulse and the repeated generation cycle.

Can an existing bottom profile be recalculated?
